Emily Dickinson Museum’s National Endowment for the Humanities Summer Institute for Teachers

‘Revolution is the Pod’: Emily Dickinson’s American Poetry

Designed for K-12 educators, this workshop will examine Dickinson’s poetry in light of the rhetoric of her day, as Americans grappled with a national identity one century on from the American Revolution. Through creative writing and engagement with contemporary poets, participants will also explore how Dickinson’s rule-breaking, revolutionary poetry sparks the imaginations of new generations. 

Thank you for your interest in being a 2026 workshop participant! All applicants should read the full program description and review the listed eligibility criteria before proceeding. Only eligible applicants will be considered. 

To apply, please complete the teacher application form and upload the following materials:

  • Resumé or CV

  • Application Essay: The application essay should be approximately two double-spaced pages. Application essays should explain how this program will benefit the participant professionally. They should, therefore, address the following:

    1. Your intellectual interests as they relate to the topic of the institute.

    2. Your special perspectives, skills, or experiences that would contribute to the program.

    3. How you envision your participation in the institute will serve your teaching goals.

Application timeline: Applications are due March 6, 2026 at 12AM ET. You will be notified on April 6, 2026. Successful applicants must confirm participation by April 17, 2026.
