The goal of the Kauffman Fellowship is to allow a highly self-motivated student to perform biomedical laboratory research in a field of interest, regardless of the laboratory's ability to offer a stipend or the student's financial need.
Applicants must identify possible labs in which they would like to contribute to research efforts; these may be first identified through reading, faculty connections, or other sources. You need to make contact with these labs before submitting your application to make sure that they would have a place for you, and to find out the kind of research that you will be conducting. Amherst College labs are not eligible placements.
Summer research should be in the area of modern biology relevant to medicine, i.e. molecular biology, cell biology, immunology, biochemistry, etc. Upon completion of the funded research position, the recipient will write a 3-5 page scientific review of the research conducted during the fellowship.
If you have any questions or have difficulties with the application, please send an email to Carolyn (Margolin) Estes at cmargolin@amherst.edu.
